This piece celebrates the Greek myth of Demeter, goddess of the harvest, and her daughter Persephone. When the beautiful Persephone is kidnapped by Hades, god of the underworld, Demeter withdraws from the fields, and all the crops wither. Persephone refuses to eat or drink while she is in Death's kingdom, but finally becoms so hngry and weak that she eats six pomegranate seeds. Hades is persuaded to relent and allows Persephone to return to the earth, but because of the six pomegranate seeds, she must spend six months of the year with him, and six months above ground with her mother. When Persephone is in the underworld, our world is cold and wintry, when she returns, Demeter calls forth the vegetation that supports all life on earth.
