No human being is truly “black” or truly “white.” Black and white are social constructs: masks, that hide our true nature. We have varying amounts of melanin, a brown pigment synthesized in the skin by specialized cells called “melanocytes.” How much benefit has been accorded, how much suffering inflicted, on the basis of the number of melanocytes per square inch of skin!
