Cup 26: Death

Everyone’s excrement is somebody’s food.

Flowers love earthworm poop, beetles eat bear poop.

Flowers and earthworms and beetles all die

and fungi eat them and feed them to the trees.

Underground death connects life to life

Like your heart connects your two arms

I wonder if these shapeshifters ever think about the light

Are they curious about air

where all the killing happens

If they see us through the shadowy grains of soil

Lumbering about crushing flowers in our teeth

Turning trees into toilet paper

Do they envy our vision in the day

Or pity our blindness in the night?
